Government Grants of up to £8,000 for Electric Vans

The Department for Transport has today announced its plans to extend its Plug-in grant scheme for cars to now include vans. This is great news for companies who want to purchase new vehicles; green their fleets; or who want to save money on transport costs.

The grant, available to commercial and domestic customers, will cover 20% of the cost of the vehicle up to a maximum of £8,000 as long as the vehicle meets the technical criteria laid out by government including CO2 emissions, minimum top speed, range and battery performance.

For details on this scheme, visit the Department for Transport website.

A Bite Sized Introduction to Open Innovation

Open Innovation is starting to become a lot more popular in the UK despite it having already found it’s feet in other parts of Europe like Austria and Germany, but what is open innovation and how can it help your business succeed?

In essence, open innovation is the process of opening up your business to external ideas from third parties which can often yield better rewards for your business than ideas generated internally (closed innovation). Of course, you don’t need to make your business completely transparent but you may consider posting particular problems or challenges which others may be able to help you solve. For example, I manage the Water Innovation Network which is helping Anglian Water find solutions to some of their key challenges around leakage reduction, carbon reduction and renewable energy generation. By posting these challenges in an open way, Anglian Water is now receiving solutions from companies all around the world. It’s a win for Anglian Water who receive new and tangible ideas that help their business whilst at the same time, innovative supply chain companies are able to pitch their solutions to a new potential buyer.

Open innovation is particularly successful for small companies who don’t have large research budgets and is also a good tool for small companies who want to work with larger companies who are open to innovation. So, if you have a problem or a challenge which needs a solution, consider open innovation as a tool to help!

Charge Your Car From a Leaf

Lotus Charger

Electric vehicle charging posts are not yet mainstream devices but the first “designer” charging posts are already starting to be produced. This pretty awesome design, called the Lotus which has been designed by Italian company Luminexence, resembles a giant leaf bursting out of the ground. Curiously, the solar panel on the top only generates 500W of output, whilst a larger leaf version generates 2.8kW, which is not going to be enough to charge your vehicle, but it certainly makes a statement!

Vedge Out on Organic Waste

British designer James Wood has created this fantastic concept for dealing with organic waste in the home. I like it because it is not only attractive, but solves the problem of dealing with organic waste at source which we are still sending to landfill. The 20 litre Vedge wormery helps to digest waste in the kitchen, creating a rich fertiliser which can be used to grow herbs for cooking. The only downside is that I don’t think I’d have room for it in my kitchen but I love its creativity and simplicity.
